SABC degrades black culture

One wonders if the head of programming at the SABC ever makes time to check the scripts of black films because our culture and customs are continually being ridiculed.

One wonders if the head of programming at the SABC ever makes time to check the scripts of black films because our culture and customs are continually being ridiculed.

The last straw was the drama, Umthunzi Wentaba, flighted on SABC1 about the Xhosa rite of passage to manhood. Our culture and customs were portrayed as barbaric and backward.

It was a desecration of a proud tradition that I, my father, his father and all my brothers had gone through.

Not so long ago, another odious depiction of our customs and traditions was made in Ubizo. It was heavily laden with inaccurate information about abangoma.

On the popular soapie Isidingo, during the ilobolo negotiations between the Matabanes and Moletsanes, Dumisane Thusong who had fathered Lettie's child, had to pay ilobolo before being accepted into her family. Now as far as I know, that kind of nonsense does not happen in any African culture.

We know that these stories are fiction, but for the love of God get the facts right.

It hurts having to hear from other races how backward, barbaric and uncivilised black people are. The SABC should get experts in African culture to look at scripts and content or the sacrilege of our proud way of life will continue.
