Education Minister Naledi Pandor yesterday launched a R6million bursary fund for students pursuing a teaching career in Limpopo.
The launch, which took place at the University of Limpopo's Turfloop Campus, was marred by protesting students.
Students shouted at the minister as she entered the university and said they wanted her to speak to them about financial assistance for tertiary students.
Pandor, however, proceeded to the hall under heavy police presence to speak to the teaching students inside the hall.
She handed over the R6million cheque to the vice-chancellor Mahlo Mokgalong.
Pandor said she would not be diverted from her programme and needed to speak to those students who were pursuing careers in teaching.
"I have been through various protests and this is not new to me.
"The behaviour of students should not deter us from moving ahead with our programme," she said.
Pandor said her department would put aside an amount of R700million in the next three years to help teaching students.
"We need to help those students who are from rural areas and who are interested in the teaching profession," Pandor said.
She said priority areas would be mathematics, sciences and commercial subjects.
Provincial education MEC Aaron Motsoaledi expressed confidence that the students would help to fight the problem of teacher shortages in schools.
"I am sure that when you put the final full stop on your studies at this university, principals from various schools will be waiting outside," Motsoaledi said.
