Gang member attacks cop in high court

Police used pepper spray in the Cape high court yesterday after one of the eight accused in a gang trial attacked a policeman.

Police used pepper spray in the Cape high court yesterday after one of the eight accused in a gang trial attacked a policeman.

The incident came shortly after Judge Anton Veldhuizen postponed the case to May 2 for sentencing.

The judge and his assessors had left the courtroom when a member of the public reportedly tossed a packet containing cigarettes into the dock.

An inspector threw it back, and one of the gangsters attacked him.

Other police and some of the gang members intervened.

A policeman used pepper spray as the first gangster repeatedly tried to get at the inspector.

The eight men eventually went to the cells as people in the gallery hurled insults at the inspector.

The eight men, all members of the Fancy Boys gang, were convicted last week on a string of charges. - Sapa
