ANC deputy president Jacob Zuma has chastised the media for failing to distinguish between a succession battle and a robust debate within the ANC.
Delivering the 14th Chris Hani Memorial Lecture at the University of Limpopo, Zuma said the media did not understand what a robust debate was and often blew things out of proportion as if there was a crisis in the ANC.
"Unfortunately, they don't ask us what we are doing. We would clarify these issues," Zuma said.
In his hour-long speech, Zuma urged the youth to ensure that the cultures and traditions of the tripartite alliance were intact.
He said he last saw Hani two days before his death.
He said they had been to the Eastern Cape to meet with Bantu Holomisa, then a member of the ANC.
"We had agreed to speak again and continue with our work after Easter, but unfortunately we never got to meet again," Zuma said.
Zuma said if Hani was still alive, there would have been less poverty and under-development in the country.
"He was a servant of the people. He gave his life to the struggle for freedom, the freedom he never lived to enjoy," he said.
The Young Communist League's Buti Manamela warned against the growing culture of corruption within the movement.
