ANC deputy president Jacob Zuma yesterday called on the church to be vocal on morality.

ANC deputy president Jacob Zuma yesterday called on the church to be vocal on morality.

The erstwhile head of the ANC's abortive moral regeneration campaign said the church had a role to play in ensuring the laws of the country were in line with the wishes of the majority.

"The church was involved in the formation of the Freedom Charter. It was there when the ANC was founded in 1912 and it participated in the struggle for freedom," Zuma said.

He said it was high time the church confronted the government on laws that were not morally right, but warned it must also participate in debates on bills before they were signed into law.

Zuma was speaking to about 300 people at the launch of the Rustenburg group of churches' prayer day on poverty, unemployment, HIV-Aids and crime. - Sapa
