The Northern Cape provincial Education Department has put aside R2,6 million to promote mass participation in different sporting codes in schools in the area.

The aim is to see all the pupils being involved in one or other of the sporting codes, from soccer, netball, athletics, boxing, rugby, cricket to volleyball. This after the Education Department embarked on a mission to revive sports, arts and culture in schools.

The initiative came after a series of summits, imbizos and indabas after concerns from community members on the gradual death of competitive sports in schools.

Media and parliamentary officer Sam Bopape said they will also organise competitions in schools within the clusters.

"We will promote mass participation in sports and recreation, with the emphasis also on the schools in the rural areas and farms from primary and secondary schools."

More than 50 sports assistants will be employed at various schools in Northern Cape to promote and develop sports.
