A Free State farmer and his wife have been arrested after police this week found two teenage girls chained to a tree.

The girls, aged 15 and 16, were found on HaKgauta farm in Fouriesburg, near the Lesotho border.

The farmer's wife Luci Mofokeng, 32, was arrested on the farm immediately and her husband Gauta Mofokeng, 64, was arrested later on Wednesday evening.

The couple appeared in the Fouriesburg magistrates' court yesterday and were granted total bail of R1500.

Police spokesman Constable Christopher Mophiring said police were patrolling near the border when they spotted the chained girls.

He said they were verbally abused by the woman when they asked about the girls.

The girls, from Lesotho, had crossed into South Africa on Tuesday to fetch wood.
