The Soweto version of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet opens at the Civic Theatre in Johannesburg, tomorrow.
Titled The Soweto Story, the production is a truly South African adaptation of the famous story of the star-crossed lovers
Presented in the style of a Broadway musical, the production promises to be a groundbreaking piece of theatre work.
It will also unleash the acting talents of new finds Nkoto Malebye and Aubrey Poo.
The two young lovers in the Soweto version are named Thandi and Vuyani.
The two are drawn to each other even though they are from different cultures and backgrounds. Their passionate relationship, however, has tragic consequences.
Malebye and Poo may not yet be well known, but they are bound to make waves locally and internationally.
Malebye started her singing career at the tender age of five and was lead singer of a gospel choir for two years.
She attended the National School of the Arts in Braamfontein where she took part in several theatre productions, including The Free State, Janice Honeymoon's adaptation of Anton Chekov's The Cherry Orchard, and the musical, The Rainbow Child.
In 2006, Malebye had a part in the market Theatre musical Ain't Misbehavin, directed by Malcom Purkey.
Poo has worked in stage, film and television for several years, including working with seasoned actors such as Jana Cilliers, David Dennis, Pamela Nomvete and Lindani Nkosi. He is an award-winning actor.
