Refs named for Afcon clash

Sowetan Reporter

Safa yesterday announced that its referees, Jerome Damon (middleman), Siphiwe Jibiliza (assistant referee) and Enock Molefe (assistant referee) will officiate in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Zimbabwe and Morocco this weekend.

The match will be played in Zimbabwe. The Confederation of African Football reinstated referees, Daniel Bennett and Lazarus Matela on its panel after they passed a fitness test in Togo. The two were suspended in December 2006 after they failed a similar test at a referees' workshop in Morocco.

Meanwhile, Safa has suspended Fifa panel referees, Happy Radebe and Reginald Motloung for failing the national fitness test at Boksburg Stadium two weeks ago.

The National Referees Development Officer, Carlos Henriques, will tour the nine provinces to conduct routine tests from the end of April to May 2007. The tour will be used as a yardstick to determine the national referees panel for next season. All participating referees will be required to sit for a national referees examination, where the pass mark is 75 percent.
