Thirteen multidrug- resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) patients, who absconded from the Pretoria West TB Hospital, have been found.

They are currently being kept under strict security supervision at Sizwe TB Hospital on the East Rand.

The 13 patients allegedly forced their way out of the Pretoria hospital on Monday.

They had demanded to be discharged and complete their treatment as outpatients.

They showed up at Sizwe hospital, where they were previously being treated.

Vusi Sibiya, spokesman for the Department of Health, said the department had obtained a high court interim interdict preventing the 13 from leaving the hospital until they had been cured.

"We want to ensure they stay in hospital.

"As outpatients they pose a great risk to anyone who is not infected," said Sibiya.
