"Both vehicles were travelling on the North Rand road at about 7.20am," said police spokesman Kobeli Mokheseng.
The 30-year-old driver of the car was seriously injured and three men in the back of the bakkie sustained minor injuries.
Mokheseng said traffic was affected for about two hours.
A case of reckless and negligent driving is being investigated. - Sapa
