A ward councillor from Mpumalanga, who allegedly tried to illegally evict people who had bought repossessed houses from a bank, has been charged with intimidation and malicious damage to property.

Ward 5 councillor in Emalahleni municipality in Witbank, Eward Baloyi, 38, allegedly led a group of people whose houses had been repossessed by the bank and intimidated the new owners.

An attorney who bought one of the houses at a public auction laid charges against Baloyi after the ANC councillor allegedly made death threats and attempted to burn his house down.

Baloyi and the previous owners of the house were arrested and released on R500 bail in the Witbank magistrates' court.

The case was postponed because the state still has to gather additional information, including the cost of damages caused by a fire after the attorney's house was set alight.
