The planned mass action by 23000 members of the teachers' union Sadtu in the North West was suspended in an urgent meeting held yesterday.

The mass action was scheduled to take place today.

Teachers in the province have already participated in protest actions such as picketing and sit-ins. These activities will now cease because of a high level of interaction between Sadtu and North West's government.

The parties have recognised that the issues raised were serious, reports said.

Accordingly, a joint task team headed by the head of the Education Department and the provincial secretary of Sadtu had been set up to look into the issues. - Elisha Molefe
