Makwane access road was officially opened by the Deputy Minister of Public Works, Nthopile Kganyago, at Phuthaditjaba in QwaQwa, Free State, at the weekend.
The project has been voted the best in this year's Expanded Public Works Programme Recognition Awards.
The Makwane project is a 13km long road constructed with brick paving costing R15million.
It consists of two roads - the S1499 and the S1500 - stretching 3,9km and 9,5km respectively.
Among the dignitaries who attended the opening ceremony were Free State MEC for public works, roads and transport Seiso Mohai, executive mayor of Maluti A Phofung municipality B Mzangwa, and the head of department, Makhosini Nkosi.
In his speech Kganyago said: "The EPWP projects bring dignity to the people, create jobs, fight poverty, enhance the lives of the community and above all showcase what the people can do with their own hands."
Mohai said such projects contributed immensely to the acquisition of skills within the community and created jobs.
He encouraged emerging contactors to improve their skills, as they had shown in the construction of Makwane road project.
He thanked the community of Makwane and surrounding areas for their contribution towards the success of the project.
