Wildlife ranger Thomas Mathosi was in a stable condition in hospital after the vehicle in which he was a passenger was overturned by a group of elephants in the Kruger National Park last week.

Wildlife ranger Thomas Mathosi was in a stable condition in hospital after the vehicle in which he was a passenger was overturned by a group of elephants in the Kruger National Park last week.

The rangers were driving along a management road north of Punda Maria Rest Camp and found themselves in a breeding herd.

As they watched the herd in front of them, a smaller group of elephants stormed them from behind and flipped their vehicle over, trapping Sandra Basson, the section ranger at Pafuri, and the driver. The rangers thrown clear from the back of the vehicle, fired three warning shots to scare the elephants and freed their trapped colleagues.

Mathosi, who seriously injured his thigh, was sent to Polokwane for further treatment. The others were discharged . - Sapa
