Three mourners die in funeral procession accident

Three mourners, among them a brother and sister, were killed when their car overturned during a funeral procession yesterday.

Two other people in the car were critically injured.

Police said the car rolled several times, flinging out all five occupants.

Themba Mthombothi, 32, the driver of the BMW 3 series, his younger sister Nontsikelelo Mthombothi, 26, of Block F Soshanguve, and Francis Masango, 40, of Mamelodi East. died on the Mabopane Highway.

The injured were identified as Thulani Mthombothi, 23, and Bobo Masango, in her 20s. They were taken to hospital in GaRankuwa in a critical condition, said police.

The accident occurred at about 10am.

Captain Lucas Sithole of Pretoria police said that the cause of the accident was not yet known, but relatives and other mourners blamed a rear tyre burst. Both sides of the highway were closed for about two hours.
