I was shocked by Butana Komphela's utterances in response to the appointment of the new PSL chief, Kjetil Siem.

Much as I wanted a South African to get the job, I did not expect Komphela to bring up the race issue. South Africa is a democratic country that prohibits racial discrimination.

Komphela's comments against Irvin Khoza and Molefi Oliphant show how much he hates both men.

We do not need an expert to justify the role that Khoza has played in local and African soccer. Kicking him out of the sport would be suicidal.

Komphela does not understand the difference between Safa and PSL.

I think politicians need education on soccer issues.

If, indeed, he is interested in the development of soccer, he should be worried about the condition of sports facilities in rural areas.

It should also be noted that not only Gauteng children want to play sport. The 2010 Soccer World Cup will help our country to grow economically, but that should not end football development. We should look beyond the soccer showpiece and let youngsters dream beyond it.

It's unfortunate that we lack people who are willing to learn and take over the reins in the future.
