KwaZulu-Natal's social welfare department stepped in yesterday to provide food and tents as mop-up operations continued following last Thursday's major storms in the area.

Four family members srowned after their mud hut was washed away during the floods in the Bhambayi informal settlement, north of Durban.

Most parts of KwaZulu- Natal were affected by the storms, which have left hundreds of people homeless.

Buyisiwe Ximba, 43, her daughters Nikiwe, 26, and Zama, 18, as well as her grandson Nkanyiso, who was two, drowned. So far, only the body of Nikiwe Ximba has been recovered by emergency personnel.
