South Africa has the leverage to pressurise President Robert Mugabe to end the misery of Zimbabweans.
The recent brutal assault of MDC members cannot be condoned by any individual or institution that has the welfare, respect and dignity of people at heart.
Mugabe has always been one of the shining sons of Africa. His contribution to the struggle against oppression has been an inspiration to revolutionaries.
The events in Zimbabwe have made it extremely irrational to say anything positive about Mugabe. Irrespective of the influence he has had on my life as a freedom fighter, I feel the time has come for the old man to hand over the baton of leadership.
As things stand Mugabe has degenerated into an embarrassment to all freedom loving Africans. South Africa's silence does not speak well of our commitment to democracy, human rights and the rule of law.
We therefore urge our leaders to convince Mugabe that the time to hand over power is now, before the world starts baying for his blood like former presidents Charles Taylor and Slobodan Milosovic.
Such a move would be a serious blot on the history of Africa's anti-colonial struggle. Africa should urgently act to stop the carnage in Zimbabwe.
