Vaal Rand police have launched a manhunt for the driver of a car who caused the accident that claimed the lives of two of their colleagues on Saturday.

The driver of a red Toyota Conquest caused the accident that saw a marked police sedan overturn, killing its two occupants.

Vaal Rand police spokesman Captain Veli Mcera said the two policemen were driving on the Golden Highway, outside Sebokeng, Vaal Rand, at about 1am on Saturday.

He said the driver of the speeding Conquest turned in front of the police sedan, which overturned. The driver fled the scene of the accident. Mzwakhe Mbongo, 32, and Khethollo Majoro, 30, died instantly.

The policemen were stationed at the Barrage police station, outside Vereeniging.

"We are appealing to anyone with information about the accident, as well as the driver of the Conquest, to please come forward," Mcera said.

Charges of culpable homicide are being investigated.
