Auditions for community theatre groups to participate in the yearly Stop Crime Drama Festival took place in Klerksdorp and Taung at the weekend.
Now a part of the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation's portfolio of youth and community development programmes, the festival unearths and rewards the best production, script, director, actor and most promising production.
It is a part of Sowetan's unfolding and multi-pronged campaign against crime and criminality that includes the interactive involvement of our readers.
Aimed at nurturing talent and to showcase that talent at grassroots level, the festival contributes to the fight against crime.
Open to amateur groups, 18 groups deemed fit for the festival were selected at the auditions. They will be assigned a professional to help them knock their work into shape.
Chief organisers Martin Koboekae and Julian Seleke-Mokoto, who have been running the festival for a decade, said only groups whose work carries a tangible and convincing anti- crime theme were auditioned.
This year's Stop Crime Drama Festival will be held at the Mmabana Cultural Centre in Mmabatho, North West, on March 30 and 31 and April 1.
Koboekae and Seleke-Mokoto, who are established actors, playwrights and directors, ran the festival in Gauteng for its first two years. It has assumed a national character since 1999.
"The sponsors of the North West leg this year are the National Arts Council and the North West Arts and Culture Department," Koboekae said.
