The Eye Patch Challenge, a fundraising golf tournament to raise funds for the disabled, will be played at four different venues starting on Friday.
Endorsed by the South African Disabled Golfers Association (SADGA), the Eye Patch Challenge yearly tournament will contribute a portion of the profits to support SADGA as well as disabled children at "first swing" golf clinics.
The tournament is also a means of encouraging and creating awareness of golf as an enjoyable form of rehabilitation and recreation for the disabled.
The first event will be played at the De Zalze Country Club on March 23, followed by the one at the Pretoria Country Club on April 13, the third at Parkview Golf Club on April 19 and the final tournament will be played at the newly revamped Hermanus course on May 5.
Each regional tournament will be played as a four-ball alliance competition, with the top three teams from each region qualifying for the final in Hermanus.
The grand prize is a guaranteed place in the 2008 Women's World Cup of Golf pro-am at Sun-City, playing against the world's best women golfers. The event, apart from being a fun experience, is aimed at levelling the playing field between the disabled and able-bodied players.
It is a unique series of regional tournaments for all golfers, who will compete together on an equal basis by wearing an eye patch for an entire round of golf.
"This gives an entirely new meaning to the golf handicap system. We want the able-bodied golfers to experience the challenges facing the disabled firsth hand," said Danie Calitz, a promising golfer who two years ago lost his sight in his left eye when he hit a stone during practice.
