Divorce from fraud

Home Affairs has for years been plagued by a series of serious problems, including fraud and incompetency.

Reports that a task team has been appointed to probe these inefficiencies should, therefore, be welcomed.

Leader of the task team Odette Ramsingh last week told parliament that, among other things, the department consisted of lazy, unfriendly and unskilled personnel.

In their quest to remedy the department of these deficiencies, the task team should also probe and expose officials who are fraudulently enriching themselves by selling identity documents and marriage certificates to illegal immigrants.

This will curb the regular blunders in a department that has become a laughing stock.
