The Polokwane municipality yesterday announced a Johannesburg-based company, Wilson Bayly Holmes-Ovcon (WBHO), as the preferred bidder to build the R870,6million new Peter Mokaba sports complex.
WBHO will partner with a local black economic empowerment company, Paul Building Joint Venture, for the construction of a 45000-seater stadium.
Thabo Makunyane, mayor of the municipality, said the contractors would hand over the site today.
He said the appointment has brought to an end weeks of intense negotiations between the municipality and the bidders.
Other tenders, Makunyane said, were far higher than the budget allocated to the project. The new facility, to be known as the Peter Mokaba sports complex, would be erected next to the existing stadium.
Makunyane said Polokwane anticipated huge economic spin-offs from the project, given that the city was easily accessible from Mozambique, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Malawi.
"Polokwane, as the economic and logistic hub of Limpopo, is without doubt best placed to host soccer enthusiasts, visitors and shoppers from these countries."
Other developments in the city include the R600million International Convention Centre and improvements to the Polokwane International Airport .
