Organisers of the yearly Nongoma to Ulundi 56km Ultra Marathon organised by the Zululand district municipality have budgeted more than R300 000 for the race.

The race will be run on March 25 and the winner will pocket a cash prize of R20 000.

Zanele Magwaza, mayor of the Zululand district municipality, said the race is a qualifier for the Comrades Marathon.

"The race has been awarded the status of a qualifier for this year's Comrades Marathon.

"More than half of the R300 000 will go to the winners' prizes," she said.

She said the aim of the event, which is set to attract thousands of participants from all over the country and outside, is to unearth raw talent.

Apart from the long distance race, there will also be shorter distances, a 10km race and a 5km fun run. - Canaan Mdletshe
