Five teachers from Limpopo and Gauteng have made it to the finals of the Aggrey Klaaste Mathematics, Science and Technology Educator of the Year Awards.

The finalists are Limpopo's Sylvia Lekota of Kotankwe Primary School, John Mpahlele of Glen Cowie Secondary School, retired teacher Jeremiah Raganya, Gauteng's Phakisi Mokoena of Kgomolo Primary School and Issac Lekauta of Setjhaba-Sohle Secondary School.

The last provincial elimination was scheduled to take place in Kimberley, Northern Cape, on Wednesday and yesterday.

The competition, started in 1998, augments other events honouring teaching excellence, such as the National Teaching Awards, the Most Improved School Awards and World Teachers' Day.

The awards are aimed at promoting quality teaching of maths, science and technology by rewarding excellence in public school teaching and supporting the philosophy of nation-building by encouraging quality teaching through the acknowledgement of practising and retired teachers.

The awards honour the late, former editor-in-chief of Sowetan, Aggrey Klaaste, a founding father of the newspaper's nation-building and corporate social investment and responsibility philosophy and work.

Entry to compete for the awards is open to public primary, secondary and high school teachers.

Candidates nominated for the award must:

l Demonstrate a love for maths, science or technology and a willingness to explore new ideas to improve their teaching;

l Encourage pupils to become independent and instill in them a love for maths, science or technology;

l Display content knowledge of these subjects;

l Lead by example and be a respected member of their community;

l Work to benefit or otherwise uplift their community;

l Encourage pupils to explore maths, science or technology in projects using relevant methods;

l Exhibit a clear knowledge and understanding of their pupils and the communities they come from;

l Understand the image of science or mathematics;

l Participate in professional associations; and

l Have a proven track record in producing good results.
