'Country leads in ARV treatment'

South Africa has the highest percentage of people on antiretroviral treatment, according to Nomonde Xundu, the Department of Health's chief director for HIV and Aids.

Speaking in Johannesburg at the two-day presentation of the 9th draft of the national strategic plan on HIV and Aids for 2007-11 to Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka and members of the South African National Aids Council, which is chaired by the deputy president, Xundu said: "I am proud to announce that in South Africa we have 90percent to 95percent adherence on antiretroviral treatment.

"We have the largest number of people enrolled for this therapy in the world."
