An Eastern Cape policeman is fighting for his life in hospital after allegedly shooting his girlfriend dead and then turning the gun on himself.

A hitchhiker who witnessed the incident said Inspector Thembile Masoka parked his vehicle on the side of the road at the intersection of Delville and Sutherland streets in the Mthatha city centre on Wednesday night.

The witness said he heard gunshots about 20 minutes after he saw the car pull over.

Captain Mongezi Jozana said Masoka's girlfriend was shot twice in the chest and died instantly. Masoka has two bullet wounds in his head.

He was admitted to the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha.

Police found Masoka's service pistol next to the couple in the car.

District surgeon Papama Notyalwa told Sowetan that Masoka had earlier visited his surgery for a stress-related condition.

Inspector Xolile Mdepa said Masoka was on sick leave at the time of the incident.

Notyalwa said that if Masoka's condition did not change there was a possibility that he would be transferred to a hospital in East London.
