One of two men who tried to hijack a minibus in Orange Farm yesterday is now in a Vaal hospital after the three occupants of the vehicle overpowered him.

Captain Veli Mcera of the Vaal Rand police said one of the alleged hijackers pointed a 9mm pistol at the three occupants of the Toyota Hi Lux.

"But one of the occupants in the vehicle pushed him away and a battle for the firearm then ensued," said Mcera.

During the fight two gunshots were fired at the vehicle, which damaged the windscreen.

The alleged hijacker was overpowered by the three men. He sustained head injuries, but the other suspect fled.

Mcera said the alleged hijacker was admitted to hospital under police guard.

The suspect, he said, is expected to appear in the Vereeniging magistrates' court as soon as he recovers.

He will face charges of attempted murder, attempted armed robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and malicious damage to property.

Mcera said police were still looking for the second suspect.
