Bergman issues warning to Vuma

Vincent Vuma' s reign as the South African junior middleweight champion is hanging by a thread.

Jan Bergman, the left-hand specialist, issued this warning on his return from Namibia where his famous punch flattened Gotlieb Shileka in the eighth round last weekend.

"I have been shouting for a chance to fight Vuma, but everybody thought I was not okay mentally until someone outside home gave me this chance.

"I can only hope that this win will bring me closer to fighting for the South African title," he said.

The 37-year-old former SA and WBU welterweight titleholder had been written off as a washed up fighter after being stopped in two rounds in his last fight on September 6 2003 by Briton James Hare for the WBF title. Even authorities were reluctant to renew Bergman's professional boxing licence.

"I was nice and fit. I would have been disappointed with myself had I lost," he said.

Meanwhile, Harry Simon outpointed Stephen Nzuemba over the eighth round. It was Simon' s first fight since he escaped serious injury in car accident in Windhoek in November 2002.
