Daniel Ramadikana Modimoeng was only six days away from his 33rd birthday, but instead of preparing for his birthday, his heartbroken family is preparing to bury him tomorrow.
Modimoeng died on March 7 at the Lenmed Clinic in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg, after a short illness. He had been in hospital for a week.
The second son to Korekile and Fikile Modimoeng, he was born on March 22 1974 in Bekkersdal, West Rand in Gauteng.
Modimoeng attended Maputle Public School and matriculated at Phokompe Secondary in Mohlakeng.
A political activist from a very young age, Modimoeng became a member of the then banned ANC Youth League at the tender age of 14. At 18 he joined the Congress of South African Students. He was an active executive committee member.
He studied for a diploma in financial management at Peninsular Technikon and later enrolled at Wits Technikon to further his financial management studies.
He then joined his father in the family business, Danny's Enterprises in Bekkersdal.
But politics beckoned and Modimoeng decided to pursue a career in politics.
After the local-government elections in 2000 he became a councillor in the Westonaria municipality.
Modimoeng will be buried in the Heroes Acre in Bekkersdal tomorrow.
The service will be held at Paul Nell Hall in Bekkersdal from 7.30am.
