Former Morris Isaacson High School principal Gabriel Mandla Madida has died.

"Umabham", as he was affectionately known by his friends, colleagues and family, lived in Mulbarton, south of Johannesburg. He died at the Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital last week.

Madida was principal of the famous Morris Isaacson, known for producing student leaders such as Tsietsi Mashinini, who led the 1976 student revolt in Soweto. He started teaching at the school in 1969 and became principal in 1979 until 1993.

He will be buried on Saturday at the Kromvlei Cemetery at 11am. The funeral service will be held at 153 Riethaan Crescent, Liefde-en-Vrede in Mulbarton at 8am.
