Annanias Mathe, the man dubbed South Africa's Houdini, has asked for the C-Max cell he escaped from in November to be inspected.

He arrived at the the Pretoria magistrates' court yesterday flanked by correctional services officers, with his legs in chains and his hands cuffed.

His case was postponed to April 24 after he said through his lawyer that he wanted an inspection of the cell to prove that he could not have escaped through the window.

Legal aid representative Liz de Oliveira Serrao asked for the postponement and will now wait for the court's decision.

Mathe escaped from C-Max on the night of November 18.
