Police in Ekuvukeni, KwaZulu-Natal, are under fire from prisoner rights union, Saphor, after a vehicle transporting two awaiting-trial prisoners overturned last week, killing the men.

The vehicle was transporting prisoners to Glencoe court when the driver allegedly lost control and landed in a ditch. The prisoners died instantly.

Saphor president Miles Budhu said: "This is not the first incident. We are aware of such incidents, but they are often swept under the carpet by correctional services and SAPS."

Police spokesman Shooz Magudulela confirmed the incident.
