IFP marches over stadium name change

The Inkatha Freedom Party in Durban's eThekwini municipality will hold a protest march over the ANC's proposed renaming of King Senzangakhona Stadium to Moses Mabhida Stadium.

The ANC in the municipality recently agreed to forge ahead with the proposal to change the name of Durban's 2010 stadium as well as changing the name of the International Convention Centre to the Chief Albert Luthuli Convention Centre.

Two weeks ago the IFP stormed out of a full council meeting on the issue, vowing to continue objecting to its implementation.

Other smaller political parties said they were concerned with the process of the name changes because they felt the public were not properly consulted.

IFP caucus leader in the council Thembi Nzuza says the march would draw attention to the fact that name changes are not the domain of one single political party.

"This march is against dictatorship. We believe all parties should have been properly consulted. It is unfair to the Zulu nation that the name of Senzangakhona is removed in favour of Mabhida," Nzuza said.
