A schoolboy has been murdered allegedly for reporting four pupils of Nkangeleko Intermediate School, in Reeston, for being in possession of dagga.
Four teenagers, including two schoolmates of the murdered boy, Lunga Ngenze, were reportedly caught with dagga cigarettes at the school on Friday and were arrested.
Two of the boys, who are twins, were released into their parents' custody and two are behind bars.
One of the boys being held by the police is suspected of being Ngenze's killer.
Ngenze, 16, was stabbed twice in the neck outside a shebeen in Scenery Park while in the company of fellow pupils. He died instantly.
The boys were arrested on the same day that nine girls from Unathi High School, in Cambridge, near East London, were reportedly found with dagga-laced muffins and a bottle of brandy.
It is believed that Ngenze on Friday visited the four boys who were subsequently arrested in connection with his death. They are said to have gone to a shebeen and boozed into Saturday morning when there was a brawl between Ngenze and his alleged killer.
Sowetan has learnt that some of Ngenze's schoolmates were present when he was stabbed to death.
Ngenze's body was discovered on Monday by a passer-by.
The police said they were not aware of a murder committed in the Scenery Park area, but the principal of Nkangeleko Intermediate School, Nceba Ngcauzele, told Sowetan that Ngenze had been murdered.
Provincial Education Department spokesman Loyiso Pulumani said the department's district office would investigate allegations of a link between the murder and the drug abuse.
"We are saddened by this shocking news and the unnecessary loss of life of a boy of this age.
"Violence in our society is affecting the most vulnerable, including schoolchildren," Pulumani said.
