The establishment of the Limpopo Gospel Choir got a shot in the arm when it received a donation of R1million from the national Department of Arts and Culture last week.
The donation was announced at a fund-raising gala dinner held at Karibu Lodge outside Tzaneen.
The choir was the brainchild of noted Limpopo gospel singer, Kenny Shivambu, the leader of Gospel Explode, a group of young gospel singers seeking to develop talent and improve the state of gospel music in the province.
"We search for, train, produce and expose young talent.
"This has been consolidated into a choir that will produce and market CDs, DVDs, cassettes and videos," Shivambu said.
He said the income generated by the 24-member choir's live recordings would be ploughed back into further expansion of the project, extending it into all the districts of the province.
Fikile Dilika, the department's chief director of investments, said his department aimed to make the donation help the group discover and develop musical talent to enhance cultural life.
Dilika said music piracy was a major problem in realising cultural advancement.
"The department is now facing a big challenge of escalating music piracy in the country.
"But we are working hard and closely with other countries to end this," Dilika said.
