Eastern highveld police in Mpumalanga have launched a manhunt for the driver of a vehicle that failed to stop after knocking down two cyclists, killing one and critically injuring the other, in Piet Retief at the weekend.

The two cyclists were preparing for a race at the time of the accident on the Piet Retief-Amsterdam road when the incident occurred on Saturday shortly before 7am.

The two, aged about 30, were found lying next to the road by a doctor who was passing by.

He administered first aid and called the police while waiting for the emergency services to take them to hospital.

One cyclist died at the Muelmed Hospital in Middelburg. The other is still receiving treatment.

Police are calling on motorists or pedestrians who might have witnessed the accident to help them by calling the Crime Stop number on 08600-10111.
