Gold medalist Josiah Thugwane won the Kosmos Marathon at Lake Umlazi, Secunda, in Mpumalanga on Saturday.

Thugwane, who is the Loskop Ultra-Marathon record holder, registered a time of 2 hours 21 minutes and 37 seconds.

He was a second ahead of second-placed Graham Malinga, who clocked 2:21:38. Sipho Ngomane came third in 2.39:19.

The trio were running in the colours of Mpumalanga's Harmony Athletics Club.

Thugwane and Malinga pulled ahead of the rest of the big field at the 22km mark.

They became involved in a titanic battle, running neck to neck for the better part of the race.

It was at the 200m mark where Thugwane showed his experience and sprinted home to take the honours.

Said Thugwane: "This race is part of my preparation for the Old Mutual Ultra Marathon in April."

Meanwhile, Sibongile Rathokoe made a run- away victory in the women's section in 3:10:25.

Hot on her heels was Thuli Mbethe of Ekurhuleni in 3:14:00. The third spot was grabbed by Bronwen Rodges of Boksburg in 3:40:40.
