Relegation-bound Maritzburg United's coach Professor Ngubane is still optimistic that their chances of staying in the elite league are still alive.

He was speaking after his beleaguered charges went down 1-2 to Jomo Comos in a Castle Premiership game at Ackerville Stadium in Witbank on Saturday.

"We had a bad start in the first half, but we played well in the second stanza.

"A stupid goal in the second half killed us and we also failed to use the numerous inviting chances that we had,'' said Ngubane.

His counterpart, Jomo Sono, praised his boys after collecting the valuable points.

"We played well, but nearly gave the game away because of a lack of concentration towards the end of the second half."

The game started at a fast pace with the hosts enjoying major possession. They could have scored an avalanche of goals but poor finishing was their downfall.

Cosmos grabbed an early lead in the 13th minute through Gerald Mtshali to make the half-time score 1-0. Ezenkosi increased their lead to 2-0 in the 62nd minute with a beauty from the boot of striker Anthony Laffor.

The KwaZulu-Natal side pulled one back in the 75th minute through Michael Mogaladi from close range.
