The Mpumalanga province has posted remarkable achievements in critical service delivery areas.

Premier Thabang Makwetla said this during the opening of the second annual members' assembly for the South African Local Government Association (Salga) held in Mpumalanga last week.

He said the province had made great strides in areas like providingwater, sanitation and electricity.

It has also delivered various programmes to extend a social security net for the poor, he said.

The three-day gathering, held at Badplaas, started last Wednesday and finished at the weekend.

The event saw the province's best performing municipalities receive excellence awards that would encourage them to do even better in the future.

Some municipalities were recognised for their performance in how they addressed issues such as taking care of the elderly and disabled.

Ehlanzeni municipality was recognised for being the best in handling the delicate and sensitive issues surrounding HIV-Aids and it was also the best employer with the best principal job evaluation committee.
