High-riding Kaizer Chiefs' football club has become the latest ambassadors of road safety in KwaZulu-Natal.

Chiefs have teamed up with the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport to spread the gospel of road safety.

In the campaign Amakhosi have joined their PSL counterparts such as AmaZulu, Lamontville Golden Arrows and Maritzburg United and on Friday in Durban they were handing out information pamphlets and encouraging motorists and pedestrians to respect and abide by the law.

Thebe Mohatle Chiefs' spokesman, said they had decided to join hands with the Department of Transport simply because they supported the good cause.

"The people who die on the roads are our supporters and even losing one supporter is totally unacceptable, so we felt that we had to do something," said Mohatle.

Mohatle said they would be spreading the message all over the country because it was important for the team to increase their support by ensuring that no one loses their life on the roads.

A spokesman for the provincial Department of Transport, Nonkululeko Mbatha, said that Chiefs had initiated the campaign and they had agreed to work with them.

"We had already agreed to work with all the football teams playing in top flight football in the province and when Chiefs agreed it was a blessing as they command a huge support," said Mbatha.

She said her department would be attending all the matches played in the province where they would be preaching the gospel of road safety.

"Many football supporters use our roads weekly going to the stadiums and if all those people attending soccer matches could take a message to their families, I think it would save many lives," she said.

In yesterday's match between Arrows and Black Leopards in Umlazi, pamphlets were handed out with strong messages about road safety and the same would be done on Wednesday when Maritzburg United play Sundowns in Pietermaritzburg. The department has had similar partnerships with local musical icons such the late Lebo Mathosa, Jabu Khanyile and Ladysmith Black Mambazo.
