Kessel Moseki Makgale, a gifted sportsman and evergreen comedian, has passed away.
The Katlehong-based Makgale died last Friday at the Morningside Clinic in Sandton after suffering from throat cancer.
Kess-Baba, as he was affectionately known, was born in Katlehong near Germiston in 1964.
He started his education at Mogobeng Primary School and matriculated at Katlehong High School in 1986.
Makgale, who was passionate about sports, excelled at table tennis, volleyball, softball and athletics while he was at school.
He was also a member of the debating club at Katlehong High and won numerous awards and accolades.
He was a staunch and active member of St Peter's Anglican Church in Katlehong, where he was a chorister.
He was a member of the Men's Guild and a former master-server of the Servers Guild. He also established a youth club at the church.
Makgale worked for the Ekurhuleni metropolitan municipality's sports and recreation division as a sport administrator and was later promoted to senior sports manager.
His portfolio included responsibility for the development of such sporting codes as soccer, handball, volleyball and basketball.
The amicable Makgale had a close interaction with the provincial sporting structures in organising tournaments.
As a member of the Ekurhuleni games committee, he played a major role in organising the South African Local Government Association's tournaments.
Makgale is survived by his three children, Lulama, Keabetswe and Boipelo, his parents and two brothers.
A memorial service will be held at St Peter's Anglican Church, Katlehong, starting at 8am, from where mourners will continue to the burial at Elspark Cemetery.
