Doctor on trial for rape after 4 months

A King William's Town doctor will be prosecuted for rape - four months after a former patient laid the charge against him, Dispatch Online reported yesterday.

A King William's Town doctor will be prosecuted for rape - four months after a former patient laid the charge against him, Dispatch Online reported yesterday.

The delay resulted from the state having to verify the authenticity of a recording of a telephone conversation between the doctor, 34, and his accuser, who is 32.

The recording, which was given to the prosecutor by the doctor's attorney, Lindani Lesele, was said to contain a conversation between the doctor and the woman a few days after the incident allegedly took place.

The woman alleged she was raped when she visited the doctor's surgery for treatment on November 6.

Lawyers for the doctor hoped the tape would encourage the authorities to drop the case.

The doctor said he and the woman had consensual sex.

In January magistrate Eras Venter turned down an application by Lesele to have the case struck off the roll. - Sapa
