An 18-year-old would-be mother will show police today where she dumped a foetus she allegedly self-aborted.

The woman from Siyanda informal settlement near KwaMashu, north of Durban, was arrested on Monday after she told police her baby had been stolen.

In her statement at the Ntuzuma police station, where she laid a case of child theft, the woman claimed her new-born "baby" had been stolen by two unknown women.

She claimed to have given birth at the Mahatma Gandhi Hospital.

She said she had been discharged that evening.

The woman told police she had felt dizzy on her way home and met the two women, who helped her carry the baby.

She claimed she stopped at the side of the road and dozed off. When she awoke, the women and her baby were gone.

But police investigations have ascertained that the woman was never admitted to the hospital.

She was taken to Ntuzuma police station for questioning, where, according to police spokesman Vincent Mdunge, she confessed to having aborted the baby.

"She is expected to help the police complete their investigations by pointing out where she dumped the foetus," Mdunge said.

Mdunge said the woman, who is facing charges of defeating the ends of justice, is expected to appear in court soon.
