Residents of Shayamoya township in Kokstad have threatened to destroy all water taps in their township because the community has been without water since last Friday.

Residents say no one has explained why the water supply has been cut off.

John Matyeni, a resident and also the vice principal of Seven Fountains Primary School, said students had to fetch water from a nearby river for washing and drinking.

"When we approached our municipality about this, they referred us to Sisonke District Municipality, where water infrastructure is being controlled. But Sisonke officials play hide-and-seek," he said.

He said since Kokstad's water supply started being controlled by the Sisonke municipality there had been numerous problems.

Sisonke mayor Patrick Khoza could not be reached for comment.
