Mpumalanga police chief Commissioner Afrika Khumalo has suspended a policeman who allegedly locked a female prisoner in with six male inmates who raped her throughout the night.

Constable Jabulani Ntuli, of Volksrust police station, is facing a charge of being an accessory to rape. However, the director of public prosecutions has declined to prosecute him for a criminal charge.

Khumalo's spokesman, Sibongile Nkosi said Ntuli would appear before a disciplinary tribunal soon.

Meanwhile, the six men who allegedly raped the 27-year-old woman appeared in the Evander magistrates' court this week on charges of rape.

Ntuli had arrested the woman for being drunk in public .
