After being demolished in preparation for the World Cup, the process of rebuilding the former mecca of South African soccer, Orlando Stadium, is well on track.
Builders are already halfway with the building of two grandstands, which is a clear sign that Soweto is also getting ready for the quadrennial spectacle.
Orlando is one of the stadiums that is being prepared by the City of Johannesburg with the hope of using it as one of the training venues for the World Cup.
The good thing about the rebuilding of stadium is that most people working on the site are residents of the area.
"The project to rebuild Orlando Stadium for 2010 has helped many of us who are unemployed," said one local resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
"I'm now able to support my children with the funds that I get from my work here. It's good that the locals were also considered for jobs."
The process began in September last year when Grinaker-LTA construction company demolished the stadium. It is scheduled to be completed in May next year.
Other stadiums in Jozi that are being upgraded in preparation for the World Cup include Rand Stadium, Johannesburg Stadium and Katlehong Stadium. Ellis Park and Soccer City have already been selected for both the 2009 Confederation Cup and World Cup matches.
Ellis Park is still being used and will only be closed later in the year.
