Innocent Mayoyo and Jackie Ledwaba, both former soccer professionals, have confirmed their participation in the Mampodi 15km road race in Moletjie,Limpopo, on March 24.

Daniel "Mampodi" Radebe, organiser of the race, said: "It is a great honour to have the two soccer legends being part of the inaugural race.

"I have been working hard in the past two weeks trying to mobilise support for the race, which serves as a social responsibility for me.

"I thought there was a need to have a race in Moletjie, an area renowned for producing some of the big [-name] athletes in South Africa.

"There are a lot of opportunities in Limpopo now, unlike when some of us were still growing up and had to relocate to Gauteng to further our athletics careers."

"The most important thing is for the people of Limpopo to organise themselves. We need to have road races to encourage more youngsters to take part in the sport."

Radebe, himself a former South African marathon champion now turned administrator, said he had a meeting with all the clubs in Moletjie as part of their preparations for the race.

"We are working jointly with the Limpopo sports and recreation department in preparing for the race," he said.

"We are also using the race to educate our children about Aids and the dangers of doing crime."

Before defecting to athletics, the speedy Radebe was a deadly striker for Lebowa Police and Newtown Kicks football clubs.

Besides Radebe, some of the big-name athletes from Moletjie are Rammy and David Tsebe, as well as Vincent Maleka.
