A 35-year-old man appeared briefly in court yesterday in connection with the stabbing to death of a tavern owner at the weekend.

Police said the tavern owner, London Maubane, 46, was killed at Mmametlhake in KwaMhlanga, Mpumalanga, on Sunday.

Inspector Veli Semenya said: "It was about 2am and the victim wanted to close his business but several patrons were against this because they wanted to drink until sunrise. During the ensuing argument a patron stabbed him three times, twice in the chest and once in the head."

The suspect was remanded in custody and will appear in the Themba magistrates' court early next month. - Alfred Moselakgomo
